Tripura has been a traditional tea growing State. The agro-climatic conditions are suitable for tea plantation. There are as many as 57 tea gardens in the State, with total about 6,000 hectares of area under plantation. The current production of made tea is about 6 million kg. Further, initiative has also been taken by some tea gardens in Tripura to produce "Bio-tea", which is free from any chemical residue. Some reputed exporters have shown interest in such tea. There is a vast scope to further develop the tea industry in Tripura.
