The OrganisationTea plantation in Tripura was started under Royal Administration in the
beginning of 20th Century. Tea Industry was started in Tripura by people of East Bengal
unlike Assam where tea-plantation was started by British.
Tripura Tea
Development Corporation was set up in 1980 for development of
Tea Industry in the State. Subsequently, the management of five(5) sick
Tea gardens was entrusted with the Corporation since 1986. The State
Government has also declared T.T.D.C. as a nodal agency for growth of
small farmers for tea plantation in the State. There is a Central Tea
Processing Factory at Durgabari under the management of T.T.D.C.

(B)
PROFILE OF THE GARDENS:-
The
Corporation has so far raised two gardens of its own which are
Kamalasagar Tea Estate under the West Tripura District and Machmarra
Tea Estate under the North Tripura District. In addition the
Corporation has been managing 5 sick Tea Gardens viz., Mohanpur,
Kalacharra, Brahmakunda, Tufanialunga and Laxmilunga - all under the
West Tripura District. These five sick Tea gardens were handed over to
this Corporation in the year 1986 with a view to protecting the
interest of the traditional workers as well as to uplift the
Socio-economic condition of the workers. All these 5 gardens were
managed by the private owner. The owners of these gardens abandoned
the gardens and left, leaving hundreds of workers under starvation.
They exploited the workers and earned huge profit, without taking care
of the tea estate, resulting the Tea estates become a barren land. At
this stage the management gave priority to protect the interest of the
workers as well as to make the gardens economically viable.
In
the year 1992, Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd. Established a
Tea Processing Factory of its own the financial assistance of N. E. C.
and slowly but steadily T. T. D. C. has been becoming a commercially
viable company. But unfortunately miseries come down in the form of
globalisation. Since, we are to protect the interest and
Socio-economic condition of the worker, the cost of production is
automatically higher and this leads to incur huge loss in the recent
year.

The
agro-climatic conditions in Tripura are suitable for development of
tea plantation. The soils are generally fertile, without any major
problems of toxicity or deficiencies. The average annual rainfall is
about 2100 mm. with a fairly ever distribution over the year. Tripura
has a history of tea plantations going back to 1916 in fact, Tripura
is categorised as a traditional tea-growing state - with about 60 Tea
Estates and 4,346 small tea growers, producing about 7.5 million kg.
of tea every year.
This
makes Tripura the 5th largest, among the 14 tea producing states,
after Assam, West Bengal, Tamilnadu & Kerala. There is a
considerable scope to increase the area under tea plantation as well
as productivity. The tea currently produced in Tripura is recognised
for its good blending qualities. some plantations (like Ludhah TE,
Fatikcherra TE) in the state are going for organic production of tea.
There is considerable scope for investment in tea sector in the State.
